[Group Discussion] What is Society

In the first class of SOCI 1125, we were put into groups and asked to interpret the question “What is Society to you”. Our group had discussed among one another and than shared our ideas/thoughts to the rest of the class.

The way People work together:

relationships, communication , interactions

Our environment:

school, Home, Government

Who we are:

culture, tradition, background

All of these aspects were thought of when the question “what is society” was brought to mind. Society is everything, its not an external factor but an something within the body.

[Group Discussion] Minority Groups

Do major racial groups benefit from minority groups

In last weeks class we learned several different ways that major racial groups benefit from minority groups. We were put into groups to discuss this question. We came up with the idea that minority groups are a huge beneficial factor to stronger majority groups. They provide cheaper labor and slavery. Even to this day, minorities are taken advantage of through underground slave trades as well as the sex trade. Furthermore, Minority groups are falling to majority groups in much more subtle way’s from rent to money loans from the bank. I believe minority groups need unite and establish their rights as a group, on a global basis.

[Group Discussion] Video: Power of Illusion

November 14, 2011 our class had watched a video called Race: a power of illusion. The main intent to my understanding of the video, was that it explored the interpretation of race and the different context individuals put race into. The main characters of the video were students of some school, in what seemed to be a lab. They were put in to groups and were told to write down who they felt they seemed most similar with among each other. The respond from the students was typical, most students of the same background and race had felt they were closer alike. Once the students had decided who they were similar to, they began testing their DNA’s, and to their surprise they were most similar with the peers they had thought they were completely opposite from. This film opened my eyes to the fact that, in the human anatomy their is a very small percentage difference among one another no matter what we look like from the outside. At the end of the day, we all are one race, the human race.

[Individual] What Have My Cocoa Beans Got to Do with Canada?

I remember the class where I viewed Dr. Charles video on the “Global Sociological Imagination”. At first I did not understand what this concept meant and how powerful this concept really is. While viewing the video, I began collecting so many thoughts in my head about how interconnected our world really is. It made me question what I eat, what I wear, and how my actions can effect the lives of people in another country.  From a small cocoa bean in Ghana to an industrialized factory in the United States, It never occured to me that through development and trade so many peoples lives are changed. That one cocoa bean has provided jobs, capitalism, and pride from one nation to another.

I was amazed how powerful that video was. From a simple example, it was clear to me that the actions of one person may have some positive and negative impacts on the peoples lives that you would least expect. It was inspirational and informative, I appreciate the opportunity of viewing that video because I know it has impacted me in a positive way.

Cheers.

Biographical Sketch

My name is Sohaib Khader. I was born in Jordan on March 18 1990, and me and my family decided to move to Canada in 1997.The reason my parents moved to Canada was to provide a better future for me and my siblings. Although my family left Jordan for a better future, we still go back and visit as much as we can, usually every 3 years. The culture, tradition, and family you experience when you go back is something hard to explain. Currently I’m attending Kwantlen Polytechnic University, working hard to get my BBA in accounting. I am aspiring to get my designation as a CA. My main interests are basketball and football. I played basketball all throughout high school.  Also, I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, and this year I’m gonna try snowboarding for the first time. lastly, I enjoy watching documentaries, especially ones that make me think twice about the truth out there. The reason why I took Sociology 1125 was that all my friends recommended it. They said its a class that opens your mind to many different aspects of life, and since I like to think of my self as open minded I thought it would be a perfect fit for me. That basically sums up who I am, thanks for viewing my blog!

Cheers.
